A hate crime is hostility against a person or a group of people where they have been targeted because of their:

- Race
- Faith
- Sexual Orientation
- Gender 
- Disability
- Any other characteristic that is deemed different to that of the perpetrator's 

Victims are left traumatised and terrified 

Negatively impacts on the health and wellbeing of victims and their family and friends 

Often brutal and violent

Can impact on an entire community

Lead to tensions and conflict 

Absence of social justice can leave people feeling authorities do not care whilst not deterring perpetrators further adding to fear and vulnerabilities 


Figures from the Home Office have shown that hate crime has more than doubled since 2013. Last year (2018-2019) there were 103,379 hate crimes recorded in England and Wales in 2018-19, with a rise in hate crime seen for all categories of motivation. Hate crime however remains one of the biggest under-reported crimes in the UK with many victims not reporting their experiences.
