Somerset SEND Strategy engagement

In December 2020, Somerset County Council and NHS  Somerset  published their ‘Written Statement of Action’ (WSoA).  This is a detailed plan to improve the SEND service areas identified in the Ofsted and CQC inspection report.

We now need to update our plan and ensure our priorities for the future of  SEND have families, children and young people at its centre. The ‘SEND Strategy’ will build upon the WSoA, and continue to guide the partnership approach to Somerset SEND. 

The Strategy will lay out priorities for the next few years.  Your participation in the following questions will help to develop these priorities and provide opportunity to feed into the future of SEND in Somerset. 

During the time of the WSoA, Somerset County Council and NHS Somerset have held regular discussion events with parent carers and used feedback to inform improvements. 

Themes for the new SEND strategy have been developed using this feedback. 

**Key areas of achievement include:**
- A collaboration framework to guide our ways of working
- A new neuro-developmental pre-assessment pathway 
- An Inclusion Inquiry, and a plan to work with key partners to agree ways to improve
- An improvement in 20 week performance for Education and Health Care Plans, which is above national average
- An updated Graduated Response Tool for Schools. This tool guides users through how barriers to learning could be identified, and the strategies that might support children and young people with SEN in overcoming barriers.


Children and young people with SEND and their families will be heard and feel they have choice and control about their lives.  Not for me, with me.
